Race Research that Upturns a Whole Lot

More HERE.

My own book Nation & Race gets into skull shape in detail. I explore Mediterranean race theory vs. Nordic race theory as well. Incidentally, Sergi proved that the Germans were also predominantly brachycephalic, not dolichocephals like the true Nordics. Basically a lot of Nazi race theory was rooted in mythology (e.g., the “Aryan race”).

Thank you to the person who sent this along. Much appreciated since it (in part) supports my own thesis.

Have a looksie at some of the supposedly long-headed, Nordic Nazi elite:

Jewish PM of Poland rebuts being a “Holocaust denier”

…after blaming ‘Jewish perpetrators’

Jewzi war criminal and mass murderer Salomon Morel.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki was forced to deny being a Holocaust denier on Sunday, after suggesting earlier in the weekend that Jews were partially responsible for their own genocide.

Even so, his words prompted a public scolding from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and deepened a crisis between the two countries that began — ironically — with Poland’s effort to dissociate itself from Nazism.

Morawiecki was speaking at a conference of world leaders in Munich on Saturday when a journalist asked him about a new Polish law that bans accusations the country collaborated with Nazi Germany during World War II — despite the fact that historians say some Poles did just that.

The prime minister, whose right-wing nationalist party took power in Poland two years ago, tried to defend the law, which has outraged many Jews. “You’re not going to be seen as criminal [if you] say that there were Polish perpetrators, as there were Jewish perpetrators, as there were Russian perpetrators as well as Ukrainian perpetrators — not only German perpetrators,” Morawiecki said.

[‘I would be considered criminal for saying this’: Son of Holocaust survivors confronts Polish leader over complicity bill]

Morawiecki grouping of “Jewish perpetrators” with Nazi Germans who set out to destroy the world’s Jewish population revolted people far beyond the audience in Munich, provoking denunciations in Israel, a Jewish state founded after an estimated 6 million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust.

Yair Lapid, head of Yesh Atid, a centrist Israeli opposition party, demanded his country recall its Polish ambassador. “The Jewish state will not allow the murdered to be blamed for their own murder,” he said, according to the Associated Press.

Netanyahu called his Polish counterpart’s comments “outrageous” and gave Morawiecki a history lesson the next day, according to Haaretz, about how his wife’s grandfather was betrayed by Poles and murdered by Germans.

“The Holocaust was designed to destroy the entire Jewish people and not any other peoples,” Netanyahu said after the conversation.

“A comparison between the activities of Poles and the activities of Jews during the Holocaust is unfounded,” his office said Sunday.

Since then, Morawiecki has appeared at pains to demonstrate he knows the difference.

“The Holocaust, the genocide of the Jews committed by the German Nazis, was a horrific crime,” he wrote on Twitter. And the Polish government said in a statement to the Jerusalem Post that Morawiecki “by no means intended to deny the Holocaust, or charge the Jewish victims of the Holocaust with responsibility for what was a Nazi German perpetrated genocide.”

Some Jews did, in fact, work with Nazis during the Holocaust. Germans set up councils of locals — called Judenrat — to help govern their Jewish neighbors in ghettos that had not yet been exterminated.

But Jews on these councils were prisoners themselves and “faced impossible moral dilemmas,” the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum wrote. Some of them believed cooperating with Nazis would improve their neighbors’ lives, or spare them from death. And when Germans demanded the Judenrat turn their neighbors over for deportation, some Jewish collaborators refused, and some died for their refusal.

The situation was different for non-Jews in Nazi-occupied countries — including in Poland. While many hundreds of thousands of Poles died during the occupation, and many resisted the Nazis through underground forces, others willingly turned on their Jewish neighbors, whether out of fear, greed or anti-Semitism. About 3 million Polish Jews were killed by Nazis, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Despite such historical accounts, some Poles have long resented any association between their country and the Nazis who conquered it. Poles criticized President Barack Obama when he referred to Nazi death camps on Polish soil as “Polish death camps.”

Morawiecki’s nationalist Law and Justice party has tried aggressively to defend Poland’s image since taking power in 2016 — often with counterproductive results. For example, government ministers defended an enormous march of far-right, anti-immigrant and white supremacist groups through the capital last year.

Last month, Polish lawmakers overwhelmingly passed a bill that could jail people for saying phrases such as “Polish death camp” or otherwise suggesting Poland collaborated with Nazis. Israeli leaders — along with U.S. officials, Jewish groups and historians around the world — condemned the bill, but it will nevertheless become law later this year. Anyone convicted under the law could face fines or up to three years in jail.

Meanwhile, Morawiecki has been trying to stem accusations of Holocaust revisionism against his government. Arguably, though, the prime minister has only made the situation worse. As his government rushed to defend his comments about “Jewish perpetrators” over the weekend, someone scrawled misshapen swastikas outside the Polish Embassy in Tel Aviv.

Ayelet Shaked: Jewish Ethnostate Must Safeguard Jewish Majority

Food for thought in the year 2018…

Al Jazeera | February 13, 2018

“Israel is a Jewish state. It isn’t a state of all its nations. That is, equal rights to all citizens but not equal national rights,” she said.

Israel must safeguard a Jewish majority even at the expense of human rights, the country’s justice minister has said in a speech defending a bill that would legally define Israel as the “national home of the Jewish people” for the first time.

Ayelet Shaked said on Monday that Israel must maintain both a Jewish majority and democracy, but stressed that keeping the state’s Jewish character may come “at the price” of human rights violations.

“There is place to maintain a Jewish majority even at the price of violation of rights,” Shaked told a conference in Tel Aviv on Monday, Israeli media reported.

In her speech, Shaked, a member of the far-right Jewish Home party, defended the so-called Jewish Nation-State Bill, which would constitutionally define Israel as the national home of the Jewish people for the first time.

“There are places where the character of the State of Israel as a Jewish state must be maintained, and this sometimes comes at the expense of equality,” Shaked said, as reported by Israel’s Haaretz newspaper.

Shaked said Israel must administer equal civil, but not national, rights.

“Israel is a Jewish state. It isn’t a state of all its nations. That is, equal rights to all citizens but not equal national rights,” she said.

‘Highly dangerous’

The contentious Nation-State Bill, which still needs to be approved by Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, passed a preliminary reading last May. It is expected to be brought to a first reading later this year.

The bill states that “the right to exercise national self-determination in the State of Israel is unique to the Jewish people”.

It also demotes Arabic from an official language to a language with “special status”, even though it is the mother tongue of approximately 1.7 million Palestinian citizens of the state.

Adalah, a legal centre for Palestinian citizens of Israel, said that, because the bill would become a Basic Law in Israel, i.e. constitutionally binding, “its enactment could be used to justify through law widespread discrimination” against Israel’s non-Jewish citizens.

For that reason, it is “highly dangerous”, the group said.

The bill would also force all citizens of the state, regardless of their religion, to comply with Jewish civil law, often without legal precedent, explained Mossawa, an advocacy centre for Palestinian citizens of Israel, in a position paper.

The legislation “clearly denigrates the non-Jewish, Palestinian Arab minority to the status of second-class citizens”, Mossawa concluded.

Jewish ethnostate knocks down Bedouin school in West Bank

Reuters Staff | February 4, 2018

ABU NUWAR, West Bank (Reuters) – Israeli authorities on Sunday tore down two EU-funded classrooms that were part of a school for Bedouins in the occupied West Bank because they said they were built illegally.

Palestinians condemned the move.

Israeli authorities say such demolitions carry out court rulings against unauthorized building by Palestinians. Palestinians see it as part of a broader move to seize land for potential Jewish settlement expansion.

The two classrooms, which stood separately from the rest of the hilltop school, were demolished early in the morning by a work crew while Israeli security officers closed off the area, according to residents of the Palestinian village Abu Nuwar.

Tens of thousands of Bedouin, once nomads, live in villages across the desert region of southern Israel and in the West Bank.

It was the fifth time the school has been demolished since 2016, Palestinian officials said. Residents, with the help of non-government organizations and E.U. funding, reconstruct it each time.

“The building was built illegally and without the necessary permits. In addition, the enforcement was approved by the Supreme Court,” said a statement from Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, the military-run authority that deals with Palestinian civilian issues.

Shadi Othman, head of media in the E.U. office in Jerusalem, said: “The European Union demanded from Israel more than once not to demolish projects the European Union funds and which aim to improve the living conditions of the Palestinians.”

Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat said on Twitter the demolition was “the continuation of Israel’s humiliation of international law and only aims to break the Palestinian will for freedom and life.”

White Nationalism Spreading in Orthodox Jewish Community?

Elad Nehorai | February 5, 2018

Something disturbing has been happening in the Orthodox world. White Nationalist language is infiltrating our public spaces. It’s happening in our synagogues, in our communities, in our schools and, of course, online. And those of us who see it are looking on in increasing horror.

There was always some racism in our communities, of course; we’d begun to address it around the time Barack Obama was elected president, when calling black people shvartze — a derogatory term for a black person in Yiddish — finally started to become taboo.

But what we’re seeing now is new. It’s different. It’s not just plain racism, or hatred and judgment of a group of people because of their skin pigment. Rather, what I and others have been noticing in our communities is the emergence of a philosophy, one that the Trump era is increasingly bringing into stark relief.

It’s the philosophy of white nationalism that justifies racism, and it’s spreading like a virus among many Orthodox Jews.

Fifteen years ago, you might hear the word schvartze in synagogue. But you wouldn’t hear justifications for deporting black people to Africa. Today, you probably won’t hear a racial slur, at least, not without some sheepishness. But you will hear talking points that you could find on David Duke’s Twitter feed.

In other words, a significant group of Jews have moved from casual racism to an embrace of all-but-the-anti-Semitic aspects of modern white nationalist philosophy, with many of the assumptions and talking points that go with it.

A few weeks ago, President Trump reportedly called Haiti and other countries in Africa “shithole” countries. The white nationalists crowed. “I must come to the defense of #Haiti!” tweeted Richard Spencer, a leader of the nativist “alt-right.” “It’s a potentially beautiful and productive country. The problem is that it’s filled with shithole people. If the French dominated, they could make it great again.” David Duke of the Ku Klux Klan was also thrilled. “Trump spoke Blunt, hard truth that makes PERFECT TRUTH!” he tweeted.

But they were far from alone. When I posted my dismay about Trump’s “shithole” comment on my Facebook page, I was amazed at how similar many of the pro-Trump Orthodox Jews I knew sounded in comparison with Spencer, Duke and Trump himself.

As one argued, “Option A: El Salvador isn’t a ‘shithole,’ so they don’t need 17 years of Temporary Protected Status, and migrants from there should be sent home immediately. Option B: El Salvador is, in fact, a ‘shithole.’”

Another Orthodox friend, who had left South Africa for Israel, remarked, “I’m so glad I emigrated from a shithole.”

And another frum Jew wrote, “So, how many snowflakes would like to move to Haiti?”

When I facetiously wondered if that commenter also believed in “white genocide” (a term popular in the white nationalist community), the person responded: “I have no idea what you are talking about. I don’t know any white supremacists, so I don’t know what they ‘sound like.’ By ‘genocide’ do you mean blacks murdering white farmers in South Africa?”

And it wasn’t just in my own orbit, either. Soon I heard from friends, liberal Orthodox Jews like me, who listened in horror as online comments were repeated in synagogue on Shabbat.

And it always boiled down to the same rationalizations, those used by Spencer and Duke: Haiti and Africa are indeed shitholes, and Trump was right not to want people from those countries.

What I learned from Trump’s “shithole” comment was that the president’s dog whistles aren’t being heard by only the “alt-right” anymore. That countries dominated by blacks are shitholes was the broad consensus, it seemed to me that weekend. Despite the concerns about Trump’s “crass” wording, far too many Orthodox Jews agreed with the content.

Was it the majority of the Orthodox world? Doubtful. But was it a portion large enough to be concerned about? Absolutely.

And those who didn’t openly agree with the racist rhetoric remained silent, choosing to celebrate the naming of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, or the release of Sholom Rubashkin, rather than call out the racism in their midst.

Similarly, our leaders maintained a stiff silence. While the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Committee and the Reform movement spoke out stridently and bravely against Trump’s words, there has not been one word from the Orthodox Union or any Orthodox groups. They are no doubt afraid of the backlash of these extremists, as when Alex Rapoport’s Masbia, a soup kitchen run by an anti-Trump Hasidic Jew, lost donors when he protested the Muslim ban.

And this isn’t the first time. Since a majority of Orthodox Jews voted for Trump, they are the only group in the United States reporting growing approval ratings of Trump — up to 71%, according to AJC. So approving are they that immediately following the neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Trump’s subsequent defense of white supremacists with the claim that some neo-Nazis are “fine people”, there was the same deafening silence from Orthodox leadership, at least at first, the same defenses, and the same parroting of white nationalist talking points.

Remember the article entitled “I’m an Orthodox Jew in Israel but liberals have become so deranged with hypocrisy, I’m actually standing with the KKK on Charlottesville”?

While an outlier in its framing, this author put into words what many in his community were feeling: Ultimately, even the KKK may not be as bad as the liberal world.

How this is even possible? How could Jews, any Jews, no matter their affiliation, possibly embrace white nationalist ideology?

Look to their influencers for the answer. It’s not Spencer or Duke who Orthodox Jews are parroting. Right wing Jewish commentators, some Orthodox, have an enormous impact on the right wing Orthodox community. These establishment figures aren’t in any way as marginal as Duke and Spencer, and yet, their response to Trump’s “shithole” comment was almost identical. Think of Dennis Prager who said, “Those who truly care about Africans, many of whom are terrific people, need to honestly describe the moral state of many or most African countries.” Or think of Ben Shapiro who wrote, “The argument that Trump is wrong to call some countries s***holes comes down to nicety, not truth.” Joel Pollack, senior-editor-at-large for Breitbart, warned his followers not to ask U.S. military personnel serving in Africa to describe some of those countries: “You may be disappointed.”

Rather than Duke and Spencer, it’s these writers whose names you hear at shul. It is these voices that the average politically engaged and Orthodox Jew listens to (both Shapiro and Pollak are Orthodox Jews). It is these voices that filter their way into the discourse, who influence the way frum Jews develop their own values and political positions.

These thinkers and leaders are influencing Orthodox values – with hate.

If Shapiro is not himself a racist, by the time his arguments make it to shul, they are indistinguishable from Richard Spencer’s.

That is why, for example, so many of the same people shrugged when Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, a rabbi well-known known for his love of media attention, buddied up with Steve Bannon, who, while running Breitbart, directly oversaw the publication of articles written in conjunction with people from places like the Daily Stormer.

It’s also why there was so little objection when Bannon attended the Zionist Organization of America’s dinner, run by another influencer of Orthodox Jewry, Morton Klein.

All of these voices and influencers and access points, which are either directly or indirectly tied to the white nationalists of our country, have culminated into a sort of funnel of information for right wing Orthodox Jews. It is this information funnel that has been spreading these ideas into mainstream Orthodox discourse.

In some respects, this should not surprise us. It’s a dynamic that has been happening to the right wing world in general, which has become more and more radicalized. From the rise in hate crimes across the board for two years straight to the sharp increase in white supremacist groups to the doubling in deaths caused by white nationalists from 2016 to 2017, America’s white right has become more and more infected with not just racism but radical white nationalism. This process has been aided by the internet, an evolving language and community of the most overt hate-mongers, and a president who validates it all as acceptable in mainstream discourse.

And just as mainstream pundits like Shapiro and Prager have begun to sound more like the alt-right, so it is with Orthodox and right wing Jews, many of whom only read sites like the Daily Caller and Breitbart and watch Fox News, remaining unaware that they, too, have started to soak it up.

But there are also particular reasons that the alt-right worldview might appeal to the Orthodox. It’s no secret that there’s a healthy dose of bigotry among some Orthodox Jews against blacks and Muslims — and a stubborn refusal to criticize Islamophobia and racism, even on the part of those who themselves don’t engage in these behaviors. To those who see Muslims as the ultimate enemy — as the virulently pro-Israel Orthodox community tends to — the white nationalists’ racism will certainly appeal as a justification for their hatred. Of course, being pro-Israel doesn’t necessarily mean being Islamophobic; I myself am stridently pro-Israel. But too few Orthodox Jews are doing the work of separating their Zionism from other racist tendencies.

The irony is that Shapiro and Prager and their fellow neo-cons may be often anti-Muslim, but they are never anti-Semitic. Not so for the “alt-right.” Indeed, to white nationalists, Jews are in fact the key to the whole problem. It is the “globalist” Jew who can hide in plain sight as a white man who has pushed forward the liberal agendas. Also ironically, Laura Loomer, an alt-right Jewish star who attended the ZOA gala, seems quite aware of this, as when she tweeted, “I am a Jew who actually admits that globalist Marxist Jews run the media.”

Like the mainstream right, Orthodox Jews believe they can separate the anti-Muslim and anti-black facets of the white nationalist agenda from the Jew hatred. This, of course, is nonsense.

The fact that a portion of a community can swallow up talking points that ultimately would call for their own destruction is not only sad; it’s dangerous. Because Orthodox Jews are giving neo-Nazis cover by parroting their ideas.

By granting these ideas access in the Jewish community, the Orthodox and any others who choose to absorb it are also tacitly sending a message to the world that the ideas themselves are not problematic. When Boteach stands happily with a man who has had perhaps the biggest influence on the growth in white nationalism in America, he sends a message to the American mainstream that these ideas are acceptable, because Orthodox Jews accept them.

When Orthodox Jews stand up and defend, en masse, the use of the word “shitholes” to describe non-white nations, the mainstream right sees this and thinks, “We can’t possibly be allowing neo-Nazi ideology into our worldview. Look at all the Jews who accept this phrasing.”

It is only Jews who think they can absorb and use white nationalist ideas and still keep them under control. No one else, no other group in America, will actually care about this exclusivity when push comes to shove. If enough white nationalism soaks into our national discourse, the control these Orthodox Jews think they have over this discussion will be revealed as an illusion.

For white nationalists, there is no separating racism and anti-Semitism; the two are one and the same. And since they are part of a coherent philosophy, no amount of Jews in Trump’s court, or working on Breitbart, or parroting the talking points of those who wish to exterminate them, will change that reality.

This is the difference between the past and the present discourse around this subject in the politically conservative Orthodox world. Before, the racism that existed could theoretically be localized. Now, as an entire philosophy accompanies and justifies that racism, it will also mean actively being part of a movement that is determined to either eliminate or ethnically cleanse the Jewish people themselves.

But my fellow Orthodox Jews must reject hate, and guard against the dangers of racism, bigotry, and other white nationalist tendencies. We lose our Jewish soul if we embrace hate.

In our seventeenth podcast, a pre-show of my 1/25/18 discussion with Semiogogue, John and I engage in an informative, super fun discussion about the Nazi ethnostate vs. a modern “White Ethnostate” in America today. We discuss IN DETAIL the kinds of problems the Nazis encountered in defining “Germanity” (i.e., operational racial definitions), application of the race laws (i.e., the implementation of said definitions), and the changes that took place owing to problems that arose. Was Nazi Germany an ethnostate? A racial state? A little of both? Or neither? You decide!!!

Neo-Nazi Who Calls for ‘Slaughter’ of Jewish Children Is Jewish?

Some food for thought…

by Michael Edison Hayden | January 3, 2018
A reclusive neo-Nazi who co-runs the white supremacist Daily Stormer website, and recently said Jewish children “deserve to die,” has Jewish relatives on “both sides of his family,” his mother told Newsweek.

Andrew “Weev” Auernheimer, who handles the technical side of Stormer alongside editor Andrew Anglin, said on a podcast last month that Jews were to blame for the website’s loss of its dot com address after a white man allegedly killed peaceful protester Heather Heyer in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August. Subsequently, the site has been forced to jump around the internet.

“Someone has to step in,” Auernheimer, 32, said on the podcast Radical Agenda, hosted by Christopher Cantwell, one of the white nationalists who attended the deadly Charlottesville rally. “If you don’t let us dissent peacefully, then our only option is to murder you. To kill your children. To kill your whole families. There is only one thing absent free speech that we can do to express our dissent and that’s to slaughter you like dogs, and you’re gonna have it coming and your children will deserve to die.”

The audio was published on both Cantwell’s website and the Daily Stormer, which primarily posts Jewish conspiracy theories and memes celebrating physical violence against Jews, women and people of color. It has lost over a dozen domains following Charlottesville, but Auernheimer and Anglin have benefitted financially from peddling hate speech to the tune of thousands of dollars per month, which comes from anonymous online donations.

It’s unclear how much traffic the neo-Nazi hub has lost since being dropped from its original URL, partly because it keeps moving from place to place. Rights groups and other observers believe that the site’s traffic has taken a significant hit by being dropped, which would at least partly explain Auernheimer’s frustration.

Cantwell is currently under house arrest in Virginia on two felony charges for allegedly using tear gas and pepper spray at the Charlottesville rally. Auernheimer’s call to slaughter Jewish children appeared to make the host nervous because he interjected that killing Jews “is certainly an undesirable option I’ll state for the FBI agents and prosecutors who are listening to this show.”

But Auernheimer continued to rant about Jews, suggesting that attempts to censor his hate speech business should be punished with murder.

“We have been very, very patient,” he said. “What can we do if we can’t even post a n—-r joke or a Jewish joke on the Internet? There’s only one thing left and maybe they should be very, very wary of what they’re asking to have happen to them, if they won’t let us have that.”

Auernheimer narrowed in on specific targets later by saying that retribution should focus on, “The top class [of Jews]. The most Jewish Jews.”

“Nobody has gone after these kinds of Jews,” he added.

Newsweek has been unsuccessful in contacting Auernheimer, who is allegedly living in Ukraine after serving jail time over a computer-hacking incident. Auernheimer’s Jewish heritage was first reported by Gawker in 2012, though Auernheimer denied the report. Adrian Chen, the author of the story, told Newsweek that the infamous troll volunteered the information about his Jewish ancestry during an interview.

And his mother has confirmed it. Alyse Auernheimer told Newsweek that she was saddened that her son had wished death on children. She added that she has been estranged from him for over a decade.

“He doesn’t like us,” she said, adding that her son comes from a “large, mixed-race family” with Native American heritage, and that he most certainly has Jewish lineage “on both sides of his family.”

No one knows if Auernheimer’s listeners will turn his aggressive talk into violence, but Daily Stormer readers—allegedly including Dylann Roof, who murdered nine black churchgoers in Charleston in 2015 and William Edward Atchison, who killed two students at his high school last year—have gone on to commit horrendous acts.

Still, Auernheimer’s “repulsive and hateful” words are likely protected speech because they may not present a “clear and present danger,” said Sahar Aziz, a law professor at Rutgers University.

“The language is couched in conditional terms, perhaps purposely so,” Aziz said. “Auernheimer’s calls to kill Jews is conditioned on whether he and his followers can express dissent.”

In September, Auernheimer’s extreme rhetoric caused him to be one of the few accounts ever banned from Gab, a social network that markets itself as being pro free speech. He issued a post that said that Jews have “cornered the whole Internet” and added that someone should teach them “a lesson.” He referenced Timothy McVeigh, who killed 168 people and injured over 600 more in the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995.

Newsweek reached out to the FBI regarding Auernheimer’s apparent call for murder, but the agency declined to comment.

Auernheimer’s Jewish heritage will likely hurt him in some white nationalist circles if it becomes more widely known. To protect him, The Goyim Know, a separate website that functions as a comment section for Daily Stormer, has threatened people who accuse Anglin or Auernheimer of having Jewish lineage with a “permanent ban,” according to the site’s rules. It’s something that cuts in contrast to Daily Stormer’s stated emphasis on being a pro–free speech outlet.

White nationalists have been discussing the rumors about Auernheimer—which may not end well for his credibility in the movement.

“Jews cannot be part of the white nationalist movement, just as a white man can’t be a part of a black-nationalist group like the Nation of Islam,” Matthew Heimbach of the Traditionalist Worker Party, a white nationalist group that attended the rally in Charlottesville, told Newsweek. Any discussion of Auernheimer’s family being Jewish on both sides would be “something interesting to a lot of people,” he added.

Cantwell, who hosted the podcast, defended Auernheimer’s language and told Newsweek that the revelation of his friend’s family heritage conflicted with what he had been previously told.

“If that’s true, he wouldn’t be the first self-hating Jew,” Cantwell said.

Jewish State is paying citizens to deport Black asylum seekers

by Rosie Perper | January 10, 2018

  • Israel will offer up to $8,700 in bonuses to civilians who sign on to help the government forcibly deport asylum seekers.
  • The country announced it will, by March, evacuate its main detention center, which houses thousands of asylum seekers from war-torn countries including Sudan and Eritrea.
  • Those who don’t leave by March face “enforcement action.”

Israel will offer a cash reward to civilians who temporarily join a new government unit created to deport its asylum seekers.

The Population and Immigration Authority published a notice on Sunday that it will offer up to a 30,000 shekel bonus ($8,700) to citizens who become “inspectors” for the unit that manages asylum requests.

The ministry’s job ad states it is looking for 100 inspectors of on a temporary two-year basis starting March 2018.

Of these, 70 immigration inspectors will be hired for a two-month period to “carry out enforcement tasks against illegal aliens and their employers,” including the need to “locate, detain and monitor illegal persons.”

Also, 40 people will be hired for a 12 month contract to “conduct comprehensive questioning and investigation of asylum seekers.” Their duties will include receiving requests for political asylum and examining the “truthfulness” of the claims.

Last week, the Authority announced it would be evacuating its main Holot detention center in the south within coming months. Those in the center were given notice they must either leave the country or face indefinite incarceration, reported Haaretz.

The government will also offer cash incentives for asylum seekers who leave willfully through a repatriation program called “Assisted Voluntary Return.” The program offers to assist asylum seekers — referred to as “infiltrators” — with purchasing a plane ticket, obtaining travel documents, protection from arrest and $3,500.

The program applies to citizens of Sudan, Eritrea, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, and countries that do not have diplomatic relations with Israel.

If asylum seekers do not leave within three months the program also specifies “enforcement action” will be taken.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended the decision to expel migrants who have crossed into Israel.

“Every country must monitor its borders,” he said. “Maintaining the borders from illegal infiltration is both a right and a basic duty of a sovereign state.”

The United Nations refugee agency expressed serious concern over Israel’s decision to forcibly remove refugees on Tuesday. The agency said they have identified 80 cases in which asylum seekers relocated by Israel “risked their lives” by taking dangerous journeys to reach their next destination.

“The UN High Commission for Refugees stands ready to work with Israel to find alternative solutions for the protection needs of asylum seekers, in line with international standards,” said the agency’s spokesman William Spindler.

Israel has become a temporary shelter to an influx of thousands of asylum seekers from war-torn countries like Sudan and Eritrea.

Two American-Jewish Groups Urge Netanyahu to Change Racist African Deportation Plan

The letter by Anti-Defamation League and HIAS says that the deportation scheme ‘betrays the core values that we, as Jews, share’

Amir Tibon (Washington) | January 16, 2018

WASHINGTON – Two of the oldest national Jewish organizations in the United States have sent a joint letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urging him to change Israels policy of deporting African asylum seekers from the country. The leaders of the Anti-Defamation League, a veteran organization devoted to fighting racism and anti-semitism, and of HIAS, an organization founded as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society working to support refugees, stated that Israels deportation policy could put peoples lives at risk.

The sweeping nature of this deportation scheme, coupled with the extreme difficulty to access the Israeli asylum system is having a devastating impact on the refugee community in Israel and betrays the core values that we, as Jews, share, wrote Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of ADL, and Mark Hetfield, the CEO of HIAS.

Our objections to the new Israeli government plan stem from numerous reports which indicate that those asylum seekers who previously left Israel have been unable to return safely to their home countries, and many have encountered violence and inhumane living conditions in countries they have sought refuge in, Greenblatt and Hetfield explained.

They added that testimonies of people who were relocated by Israel to third countries in Africa indicate that they did not find durable protection there and risked their lives by taking dangerous onward journeys through conflict zones in South Sudan, Sudan and Libya to seek protection elsewhere. Some have drowned at sea en route to Europe, while others were reportedly detained, tortured and extorted by human traffickers.

They ended the letter by stating that As American Jews, one of our greatest concerns is the well-being and security of Israel; we want to see it prosper and overcome all of the challenges its precarious location imposes on it. We also care about our shared Jewish values and refugee heritage—a very human concern that reaches across borders and distances—and unifies us as a people.

Greenblatt and Hatfields letter to Netanyahu joins other appeals by Jewish American leaders on this subject. Last week, the heads of a number of other Jewish groups also published a letter against the deportation plan. Among those who signed it were the leaders of the Reform Movements Religious Action Center and the National Council of Jewish Women.

The Prime Ministers Office stated in reply to those letters that the overwhelming majority of the illegal migrants who have arrived in Israel over the past decade are neither refugees nor asylum seekers, but rather economic migrants who have come to Israel in search of work. The Government of Israel has taken a number of steps to prevent illegal immigration and to deport migrants who are already here.

There are some 35,000 Eritrean and Sudanese natives living in Israel, who have another 5,000 children who were born here. The overwhelming majority of the adults have temporary visas that they must renew every three months. The next time many of them come to renew their visas, they will be told it is the last renewal and that they will have to leave before the visa expires. The authority will propose that they either return to their countries of origin, or leave for Uganda or Rwanda.

Jewish State unveils details of new underground wall along Gaza Strip

by Jonah Mandel | January 18, 2018

Kissufim (Israel) (AFP) – The Israeli army on Thursday revealed details of a massive underground barrier being built along the border with the Gaza Strip in a bid to neutralise the threat of Palestinian attack tunnels.

Eventually stretching some 65 kilometres (41 miles), the concrete wall will be accompanied by motion sensors designed to detect tunnel digging and is expected to be completed by mid-2019.

The project had been previously announced, but details of its construction had been kept secret until Thursday, when journalists were allowed to view aspects of it.

The details were unveiled days after the army destroyed what it described as a tunnel intended for attacks stretching from the blockaded Palestinian enclave into Israel and eventually Egypt, at least the third uncovered and demolished in less than three months.

Tunnels were among Hamas’s most effective tools during the 2014 war with Israel, with militants using them to enter the Jewish state, carry out attacks and at times even return to Gaza through the underground passages.

The devastating 2014 conflict killed 2,251 Palestinians, while more than 10,000 were wounded and 100,000 were left homeless.

On the Israeli side, 74 people were killed, all but six of them soldiers.

Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza say tunnels are needed for defence.

An Israeli state inquiry published last year accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and top army brass of being unprepared for the “strategic threat” of the tunnels from the enclave run by Islamist movement Hamas.

But with the new underground barrier and sensors detecting movement, militant groups would no longer be able to build and use tunnels, a senior Israeli army official said.

“They understand that the strategic weapon of underground tunnels crossing the border is going to end,” the official told reporters.

– ‘Deep enough’ –

Workers — local and from abroad — have been labouring around the clock for nearly a year.

The barrier is being built on Israeli territory, east of the existing border fence, with four kilometres completed so far — in the area of the town of Sderot, off the northern Gaza Strip, and the Nahal Oz area near Gaza City.

The technique used is similar to that for building support walls for high-rise buildings or underground parking lots, the military official said at one of the barrier construction sites along the border.

Heavy machines dig a deep, narrow trench, filling it with bentonite slurry that keeps the trench from collapsing.

A metal reinforcing cage is inserted, with tubes sucking out the slurry and then filling the trench with cement drying into a wall approximately a metre wide.

Attack tunnels from Gaza can reach the depth of dozens of metres, with the Israeli army official only saying the new barrier would be “deep enough”.

A new, eight-metre high border fence being erected atop the underground wall will further prevent infiltrations of Gazans into Israel, the senior official said.

Speaking to reporters near the Israeli community of Kissufim, where an attack tunnel built by Islamic Jihad was demolished in late October, Israeli military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus said the underground wall would be the first such “complete underground barrier.”

The operation to demolish the tunnel in October left 12 militants dead.

“Any attempt to tunnel into Israel … will be detected and targeted” by the army, Conricus said.

But eliminating the tunnel threat would not mean that Gaza militants would cease their attacks on Israel, the senior military official said.

“They’re training, building forces for the sea and land,” he said.
